What is a DVD?
A DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) is an optical disc used to store data like the CD but with a much greater capacity. DVD’s are used to store audio and data and are used as the medium for videos and many interactive games. The standard single-sided, single layer DVD can store up to 4.7 GB worth of data but there are others capable of storing nearly four times that amount. Like a CD a DVD presents as a disc 120 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick. The DVD , however, is made of two poly-carbonate discs of 0.6mm thick that are fused together to create the final disc. This allows more information to be stored in the same area.
PROLINE IT offers three different DVD formats to its clients:
• DVD 5 is a single side, single layer disc that is read from one side. This is the standard DVD and has a storage capacity of 4.7 GB
• DVD 9 is a single side, dual layer disc that is read from one side. This DVD is becoming more common in especially the software and game industry. It has a storage capacity of 8.5 GB.
• DVD 10 is a double sided, dual layer disc that can be read from both sides.
All DVD’s can have a label printed on them, usually with offset or litho printing. The exception is the DVD 10 format where the area available to print is limited to the small ring in the center of the disc as both sides of the disc have to remain readable.
The process of authoring is very important in the creation of a DVD disc. Authoring is the process of linking together all the segments that make up the DVD title – that is the audio tracks and video tracks. Once the tracks have been encoded they need to be laid out on the disc in the correct order and alignment so they can be played on a DVD player. Authoring also involves all the extra features that are commonly found on a movie DVD. It involves the creation of menus, the generation of sub-titles for the hearing impaired or foreign viewers and any other interactive elements that need to be included.
PROLINE IT uses offset printing for DVD’s. Silk screen printing can be used with DVD 5 or DVD 9. Offset printing is advantageous as it offers a much higher quality print for photographic images. The negatives of the image are used to create plates. One plate is required is for each of the process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). These plates are fitted into the printing machine where rollers transfer the ink from the plates onto the discs. The colors merge to create the final image on the disc.
